979 Red Claws Basketball was founded in 2025 by Coach Dekyron Nicks. Growing up on the west side of Bryan in a single-parent household, Coach Nicks experienced firsthand the impact that mentors and positive role models can have on a young person's life.
After receiving support from people who helped him become successful, he made it his mission to provide those same opportunities to the next generation. Inspired by his former college roommate who founded Baton Rouge Red Claws, he launched 979 Red Claws to serve athletes throughout the Brazos Valley.

A former collegiate basketball player at Temple College, Fresno State, and Southeastern Louisiana University, Coach Nicks has dedicated his life to mentoring young athletes and helping them pursue their dreams.
He believes every child deserves guidance, opportunity, and a support system that encourages them to succeed both on and off the court. When he's not coaching, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four children and shooting pool.

Coach Londell Blue is passionate about helping young athletes develop the discipline, confidence, and work ethic needed to succeed both on and off the court. After playing at Ranger Junior College, he dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes and teaching the values of hard work, accountability, and teamwork. When he's not coaching, he enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and family.
A former Division I scholarship athlete at the University of South Alabama, Coach Allyn Cooks is passionate about helping young athletes reach their full potential. He believes success is built one step at a time through discipline, effort, and consistency. His motto is "Brick by Brick." Outside of basketball, he enjoys spending time with his wife and family, fishing, and caring for his dogs, Blue and Diamond.
Coach Doma Golakai is dedicated to making a positive impact through basketball, mentorship, and community service. His passion comes from wanting to provide opportunities and guidance he did not always have growing up. He encourages athletes to stay in school, make smart decisions, and always strive for more. He is also active in community outreach through annual backpack and school supply drives.
Coach Chris Morrow believes basketball is a powerful tool for teaching life lessons, building character, and creating opportunities. He is passionate about helping young athletes experience opportunities beyond their current environment and motivating them to pursue education and personal growth. He enjoys spending time with his three children, riding horses, and playing paintball.
A former student-athlete at San Jose City College, Coach Byron Person is passionate about mentoring young athletes and helping them make positive choices both on and off the court. Inspired by his father, who was also a coach, he believes every player deserves encouragement, support, and an opportunity to succeed. He enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and family and golfing whenever possible.
A former scholarship athlete at Southeastern Louisiana University, Coach Tavaris Nance earned degrees in Kinesiology and General Studies before dedicating himself to athlete development. He is the owner of The Factory Basketball and is passionate about helping athletes build confidence, discipline, and leadership skills through sports. He believes strong mentorship can change lives and is committed to helping every player reach their full potential.
Coach Rock Martin is passionate about helping young athletes develop discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic through basketball. A former Victoria College scholarship athlete, he believes the lessons learned through sports help athletes succeed both on and off the court, reminding players that "Discipline will carry you to places motivation can't." When he's not coaching, Coach Martin enjoys spending time with his daughter, family, friends, and roping.
